About the Ministry

Introduction to the Ministry

The Ministry of Women’s Affairs is a government agency that provides policy advice on issues specific to New Zealand women. It is the smallest core government department in New Zealand with a staff of less than 40 people and an annual budget of approximately $4 million.

The Ministry’s work is guided by the Action Plan for New Zealand Women, a five-year whole-of-government plan designed to improve the lives of New Zealand women. The plan focuses on three broad areas of work.

Economic sustainability Improving women’s ability to independently provide for themselves and their families
Work-life balance Helping women achieve a greater balance between paid work and life outside of work
Well-being Improving health and social outcomes for women

The Ministry also manages New Zealand’s international obligations in relation to the status of women and promotes appointment of women to state sector boards through its Nominations Service.
