Acknowledgements

First and foremost we would like to thank the young women and young men who generously agreed to be interviewed and to share their career decision-making experiences with us. We are extremely grateful for the amount of time and reflection they invested. Thanks also to the trades trainees who gave us feedback on our initial analysis.

We would also like to thank the organisations and institutions that supported this project by putting us in contact with their employees, trainees, and students. We would particularly like to acknowledge the secondary school staff, the Modern Apprenticeship co-ordinators, and the individuals from various Industry Training Organisations, training providers, polytechnics, and universities who went out of their way to introduce the project and our team to potential interviewees, especially when we were searching for ‘needles in haystacks’.

We also wish to acknowledge all of the NZCER staff who were involved in this project. Keren Brooking was involved in the research at all stages of the project from scoping to analysis. Cathy Lythe provided project co-ordination support, which included initial contacts with schools and training groups. Sally Robertson and Magdalene Lin helped with note taking and initial analysis. Rachel Bolstad helped in the writing of an early draft of the introduction and Rose Hipkins provided invaluable input into the school influences chapter. Kristina Louis provided Information Services support and Christine Williams provided administrative assistance. Shelley Carlyle proofread the report. We are extremely grateful for each individual’s contribution, and for the fantastic teamwork that made this report possible.

Lastly, thank you to Nicky Lynch, Kate Williamson, and others at the Ministry of Women’s Affairs who took a collaborative approach to overseeing our contract. We enjoyed working with you.
