Status of Women in new zealand

New Zealand's 6th CEDAW report to the United Nations

Our policy programme

Our policy work centres on improving the lives of New Zealand women. We are guided by government’s goal for all New Zealand women and priorities which gives us a clear direction and measurable goals to achieve.

Our priorities for the next three years – 2009-2012 – are:

  • Leadership: Women have the opportunity to develop and use their skills and talents
  • Violence: Women are healthy, empowered, resilient and safe
  • Employment: Women fully participating in work, family and community, across their life course.

The Ministry provides gender-specific policy advice to the government under these three priority areas. The Ministry works alongside other government agencies towards wider government goals to improve outcomes for New Zealand women.

The Ministry is interested in work being done in the areas of justice and safety, labour market participation and income, unpaid work, and social assistance.
