New Zealand's 6th CEDAW report to the United Nations has been released.
Action Plan goals
The Action Plan for New Zealand Women is a whole-of-government plan to improve women’s lives in the home, workplace and community.
It includes actions to improve outcomes for Māori women.
- Identify policy options based on success factors for small and medium businesses, to enhance sustainable business growth among businesses owned and operated by women, particularly Māori women (action 1.3.1).
- Assist Māori women to gain the necessary expertise in governance, management and business capability to participate effectively in managing collectively owned assets (action 1.3.3).
- Increase the number of Māori women in decision-making roles on government boards (actions 1.4.1 and 3.4.1).
- Improve safety for women, girls and older women (action 3.2.2).
- Develop and pilot tikanga-based rehabilitative programmes for Māori women inmates and offenders on community-based sentences. (action 3.2.2).
- Develop and implement initiatives to reduce Māori women’s smoking (action 3.3.2).
- Develop implementation plan for Healthy Eating, Healthy Action: Oranga Kai, Oranga Pumau (action 3.3.4).
- Reduce the incidence of sexually transmitted infections and the number of unwanted pregnancies with a particular emphasis on teenage pregnancies (action 3.3.1).
- Review the availability of social assistance support for child care (action 2.4.2).
