Younger women
Young people are a diverse, mobile and changing group.
The proportion of the population aged 12–24 is shrinking but becoming more ethnically diverse and urban than older populations.
More young people are staying at school and are more highly qualified than previously.
Employment has an important influence on well-being and independence, but today’s young people face a range of employment and financial challenges. For example, young people must consider the impact of a student loan when considering vocational or professional training.
Although decreasing, rates of unemployment are higher for younger people than for the total population.
In youth health, the rates of smoking, pregnancy and suicide have all improved.
On the flip-side, participation in sport has fallen, abortion rates are at the highest level and drinking rates of alcohol have gone up.
